Sustainability-Related Professional Development Resources

The United Nations defines sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” It has three pillars: the economy, society, and the environment. The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals – often referred to as the SDGs – lay out a road map for creating a sustainable world.

Sustainability is a rapidly growing field, with job opportunities in engineering, science, management, education, economics, political science, urban planning, architecture, and more. It is important to note that sustainability is more than a specific role; it is a mindset and a way of living. Its interdisciplinary nature opens the door to many possible career paths. Using this resource guide, you can start your journey to becoming a sustainability professional or incorporating sustainability into your job or career by exploring different career options, searching for jobs, discovering ways to get involved in sustainability locally and nationally, and learning the skills you need to succeed.
