A challenge-- and opportunity-- posed by shelter-at-home orders is how to support frontline organizations and vulnerable families in safe ways. SLS will provide “Service Opportunity Highlights” to share safe ways to serve throughout the summer, via our newsletter and blog.
The first in this series highlights the wonderful work of New American Pathways- and the safe, socially distant way you can support refugees in our communities through online/phone conversation practice. Read on for more details and please note that the next orientation session is around the corner on May 2nd!
“Volunteering with English at Home virtually will give volunteers the opportunity to continue helping clients on their English-language-learning journey during this unprecedented time. This [format] will look slightly different than our usual curriculum and home visits. Volunteers will communicate with students over the phone through whatsapp. This can be via a phone call or video chats. Online curriculum will be provided to the volunteer, but the main focus will be on communication and continuous practice of English. If you speak English and are looking to help make a difference this is a great opportunity to volunteer while continuing to socially distance!”
Orientation information is below. Once you complete the orientation, Sarah Clay at New American Pathways will match you with your conversation partner!
The next virtual orientation is scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd, at 11am. Volunteers can register using this application link. There is a $10 fee per volunteer for a required background check. That fee can be paid using this online payment method.
