The Poetics of Sustainability: Race and the Environment

Utilizing our WOVEN curriculum, this course will explore the intersections of race and the environment as urgent social, political, and ecological issues through the lens of poetry.

Air Pollution Control Engineering

The course is designed to introduce students to fundamental principles needed to address air pollution engineering. Upon completion of this course, the student should have knowledge of the air pollutants of most concern, their source and control, their atmospheric transport and fate, and policies developed to help manage the problem. The course will involve use of publicly available data from the EPA to explore air quality and emissions trends in Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

Rhetorics of Crisis

“Rhetorics of Crisis” will study the literary, cultural, and scientific rhetorics surrounding what are often depicted as three independent crises: climate change, refugee and migrant issues, and terrorism/ISIS. Throughout this course, we will make connections among these major global events, which are too often thought of as separate, but are in reality closely interlinked.

Environmentalism and Ecocriticism

Limited to Honors Program students, Environmentalism and Ecocriticism—The Cultural History of Trees.  This seminar will examine tree as they function in human technological practices, in our culture, and as source of food. We will study how trees figure in current debates about the environment, including tree structure and forest composition, trees and the law, arguments about plant intelligence, and sustainable food production in an era of environmental degradation. Not content with just reading about trees, we will also do some harvesting.

Language for Business and Technology (LBAT): France

Some courses in the LBAT France program will introduce students to the theory, principles, and practices of sustainability. They will include discussions on maintaining ecological and environmental health, creating economic welfare, and ensuring social justice. Courses focus is on sustainable development and communities in Paris, France. Students meet both in class and in town. They may interview people, shoot videos, report on sustainability practices, create websites.

Junior Design (Part 1): Project Design and Technical Communication Strategies

This course is part 1 of a two-semester Junior Design capstone course sequence that includes a computer science and technical communication component. This semester teams will develop a software solution to a problem defined by a real-world client. The semester culminates in the development of a prototype and its demonstration in a formal presentation. Supporting deliverables that teams create include a project vision statement, user stories, and a usability/design support document.

Sustainable Food Systems

Food nourishes not only our bodies, but our spirits, families, and communities. At its best, food is healthful, economically sustainable, culturally appropriate and environmentally beneficial. Yet, all too often and for too many people, the quantity, quality and character of food remains inadequate for individual nutrition and damaging to our economy, society and environment. Food production and distribution is increasingly mono-culture, globalized and processed, with significant impacts on human well-being, climate, environment, economy, and culture.

Project Studio: Technology

The Undergraduate Project Studio course offered by the School of Music in Spring 2019 presents the fundamentals of digital signal processing (DSP) as it relates to both physiological signals and musical sound. Students participate in hands-on lab sessions using EEG, ECG, EDA and other body sensors, as well as lecturediscussions of music and writings by composers and researchers who use this data in their work. Students complete weekly lab assignments and reading reflections, in addition developing a design project in small groups.

Solar Decathlon Design Challenge

This independent study is dedicated to completing Georgia Tech’s entry to the US Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon Design Challenge for 2019.  A team of students will ultimately produce a design for a net-zero ready building according to the DoE’s requirements and, should the team be selected as a finalist based on an interim report, present this to industry experts at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado in mid April 2019.  This design will be documented at a level that it could be handed to a general contractor as-is for construct

Sustainable Urban Development

This course introduces the challenges of sustainability as applied to the built environment and the built environment's interconnectivity with the natural environment.  It addresses a range of specific sustainability-related issues such as sprawl and smart growth, climate change, motorized and non-motorized transportation, social equity and environmental justice, green architecture, food systems, and community engagement.  Students will do substantial background reading, engage in class discussion, and apply their skills to a small-group, real-world project.  CP
