Energy Policy and Markets

The class will introduce students to energy technologies, with specific regards to markets and policy. The objective of the course is to provide the economist’s perspective on a broad range of topics that professionals in the energy industry will encounter.

Women in Science Fiction

Women in Science Fiction studies women writers, artists, and musicians who use science fiction to propose and debate how we might make our world more sustainable. Engaging topics like race, gender, and the environment, these women craft futures that may sometimes appear fantastical or otherwise out of reach. However, this course asserts the real-world stakes of its subject matter for Georgia Tech students. Our readings will spur discussions and assignments about today’s sustainability challenges. Globalization in the Modern Era

Globalization in the Modern Era (HTS 3055) will examine the social, political and economic bases for the phenomenon frequently referred to as "globalization." The course will discuss competing theories regarding the rise of globalization, as well as the divergent consequences that this process has left in its wake in different communities around the world. While social, economic, political and environmental inequalities are built into some aspects of globalization, the phenomenon also offers new opportunities and alternatives for development and for resistance.

Social Theory and Structure

Social Theory and Structure (HTS 3102) allows students to read the original writings of the great social thinkers who provided the foundational ideas that inspired the discipline of sociology. Implicit in these theories are fundamental questions about the relationship between the individual and the collective, what drives social change, and what comprises "the good society." The course will focus upon the writings of Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim and W.E.B. DuBois, as well as others.

Chemical Principles I Laboratory

The laboratory portion of this course focuses on foundational principles and essential techniques of chemistry. These conceptual and technical tools have great relevance to many issues of importance to society, including climate change, human health, economic security, and more. SLS-related experiments in CHEM 1211K will be related to five threads of sustainability in chemistry: Green Chemistry, Chemistry and Society, Everyday Chemical Analysis, Computational Chemistry, and Climate Change.

Sustainable Cities Studio

The studio is a practicum for students in their final year of the sustainable cities minor, bringing students from various majors to begin to apply their specialized knowledge in ways that interact to provide planning, design, and development approaches to the critical problem of linking transportation, land use, urban design, housing, and the environment together in framing sustainability policies.

Introduction to Urban and Regional Planning

This course provides an overview of the planning of cities and metropolitan regions. The legal and historical context as well as substantive areas of urban planning
are addressed. Tensions among economic, environmental and equity results of public policies and private developments are examined. Tools for involving
stakeholders in planning decisions are surveyed.

Business Communication: Design, Culture, and Theory

This course addresses sustainability and community through food and disability studies. Students write proposals and design digital projects
that explain the cultural importance of taking action in these areas in order to have a positive impact on both our college community and
the greater Atlanta area. I've selected these projects because I believe these will be the problems that my students will have to face in the
working world. I want to prepare my students for the conversations and issues that they are currently being discussed and considered. In

Urban and Regional Economics

In Urban Economics, Atlanta is an interesting city. It is one of the most segregated cities in terms of races and incomes. It is one of the most sprawled cities in the US. This unique features affect your life. For example, children from families at the 25th percentile income in Seattle, have economic outcomes comparable to children from families at the median in Atlanta (Raj et al. 2014). Why do Atlanta kids show this poor performance? We study urban economic theory about your life and city.

Globalization in Latin America

What is globalization? Is it a series of economic adjustments that has resulted in the integration of systems of production and financial markets at a world scale?Alternatively, is it a variety of biological, environmental, political and cultural phenomena that go beyond state governments and involve a number of transnational actors, such as religious organizations, multinational corporations, NGOs, media, and civil society? Does globalization imply more homogeneity or diversity? What does it mean to live in a globalized world? In what ways do global processes affect our lives?
