History of Urban Form

Understanding cities, the largest and most complex artifacts in human history, is essential as we face the challenges of building a sustainable future. This course is taught from historical vantage points across the globe, recognizing that urban form is shaped by many influences - ecological, technological, cultural, political and economic.

Energy and International Security

This course examines issues at the intersection of national energy security, sustainability, and international conflict and cooperation. Is oil import dependence a foreign policy liability or cause war? Do globalization and the interdependence of energy markets favor international cooperation and peace? More specifically, can Saudi Arabia and Russia use hydrocarbon exports as energy weapons? Alternatively, will low oil prices, as well as the promise of natural gas and future exports lock in a strategic pivot away from the Persian Gulf and reinvigorate U.S.

Architecture Design Studio I

In partnership with The Pride School Atlanta, this course explores advocacy through the design of space at three scales of architecture (in this case, as the design of building): interior space, the building, and the landscape. Can architects re-imagine the future of educational spaces and social equity by placing attention to the bidirectional relationships of space and behavior within the context of gender equality and human rights? Can advocacy become a mainstream practice, a political voice, for architects?

Virtually Remaking Cities

In addressing their sustainability agenda through design and construction, cities are subject to unique challenges, which requires effective exchange of knowledge and subject matter expertise among distributed project teams. At the same time, design and construction projects are dynamic and uncertain, requiring considerable coordination, communication and leadership to execute. Executing such projects in a virtual environment can offer many advantages and facilitate the design efforts. Yet, coordination, communication and leadership become increasingly difficult.

Biodiversity Dynamics

Biodiversity Dynamics will be a project-based course will explore where plants and animals live on the landscape, and how and why they move or evolve in response to environmental changes and human impacts. We will use real species, landscape, climate, and human impact data to explore biogeographic rules, such as the latitudinal & elevation diversity gradients. We will also learn about how landscape ecologists use species distribution models and corridor models for conservation purposes.

Energy Efficiency and Environmental Impacts

The course introduces global and local environmental issues from air transportation activities. With rapidly increasing air travel demand, environmental impacts are expected to grow despite the efforts to mitigate them. The course will address the key aspects of civil aviation research regarding airline operation, technology, policy, and aircraft design implications to the environment. The course will discuss airport noise, emissions, fuel consumption, and climate change due to aviation.

Necessary Tomorrows: Afrofuturism in Art, Architecture, and Design

This hands-on seminar/workshop will curate, develop materials for, design, and install the upcoming exhibition, NECESSARY TOMORROWS : AFROFUTURISM IN ART, ARCHITECTURE, & DESIGN.  As an aesthetic, political, and epistemological movement, Afrofuturism has been steadily gaining currency and generating broader interest over the past few decades. The movement's ethos has become urgently relevant to our present times.

Leadership Minor Capstone - Social Impact Organizations

This is a capstone style course where most of the learning will be generated through a project with a social sector (social enterprise or nonprofit) organization, and by attending the weekly IMPACT Speaker series talks.  The groundwork for understanding the opportunities and challenges of the social sector will be covered through readings, TED style videos, student-led class discussions, and by a site visit to a local nonprofit organization.

Design. Develop. Build. Africa

In 2016/17 students from three universities, Georgia Tech, Have Tech, and PBSA Düsseldorf, are collaborating to design and build a residential compound in the Volta region in Ghana. Working with the NGO Meeting Bismarck, the community of Have, local and international engineers and the department for Health of the Volta region, the project aims to revive vernacular construction techniques such as bamboo through digital design methodology and c raft. The Midwives Quarters Have provide housing for midwives and international aid workers to enable their work at the Health Clinic in Have.

Mineral Surface Geochemistry

The biogeochemical cyclings of elements among geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere are important processes controlling the fate and transport of contaminants and nutrients. This course will discuss the role of minerals in controlling contaminant and nutrient flow in natural environments, with assignments/projects related to mineral properties and surface reactions.
