Engineering Psychology

Engineering psychology uses scientific knowledge about the perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral capabilities of humans to specify the design and use of human-machine systems (such as equipment, environments, tasks, jobs, and systems) for productive, safe, comfortable, and effective human use. In this course, you’ll learn about the capabilities and limitations of humans and how this knowledge informs engineering design principles of displays, controls, physical environments, human error, and automation.

Sustainable Communities

This course focuses on social, artistic, cultural, and scientific dimensions of sustainability and the concepts of identity, diversity, social equity and inclusion/exclusion in the French context. This course will introduce students to sustainable communities in France through lectures, projects, videos, downloads from the Internet, and class discussions.

Sustainability, Technology, and Policy

The goal of this course is to provide a solid introduction to the concept of sustainable growth and development. Students will learn how to professionally navigate the current debate on sustainability and to assess strategies to promote sustainable communities and a sustainable planet. The course will blend qualitative and quantitative analysis of sustainable development, with large use of data analysis to measure progress towards sustainable development.

Bioethics

Students will not only learn about the ethical dilemmas in our community, but develop measures and actions to alleviate such. They could make a lasting impact on the community and learn the values of life long service.

Intro to Research

This course was created to give students the tools and skills necessary to participate in research as an integral component in their undergraduate experience. This course will explore research ethics (satisfying the research ethics requirements for funding through the NSF, NIH or PURA awards), scientific literacy (finding, reading, and writing research papers), and research careers. The course makes frequent use of case studies and discussions and considers the impact of research and industry on communities.

Policy, Trends, and Ethics in Real Estate Development

Through experiential learning, students of this course will understand sustainability in the built environment and within a community. They will witness the connection between service and profitability as related to property management that helps eliminate transiency which has proven to be a primary contributor to failing public schools. Teams within the class will be assigned real world deliverable that will assist with the mission of the partnered nonprofit.

Philosophy of Food

This course is divided into two parts:  1. In the first part of the course, we will discuss a number of topics in food studies, including food justice, consumer ethics, food and identity, industrial plant and animal agriculture and alternatives; workers;  verconsumption and obesity, and paternalism and public health. Through this part, special attention will be paid to the concept of "sustainable communities" and to how various food-related decisions affect the ability of communities to function sustainably.

Sustainability, Technology, and Policy

This course - taught on the Pacific Program - will develop a theoretical understanding of sustainability, from a bottom-up perspective that considers ecological outcomes as a function of human institutions. It begins with defining and understanding the tragedy of the commons, and develops an understanding of why we might not be doomed to this tragedy. While exploring broad themes in environmental ethics, philosophy, and management, it will explore cases in the Pacific context, and will include a service-learning project in Fiji.
